If the=20 world's finest minds can unravel only with = difficulty=20 the deeper workings of nature, how could it be = supposed that those workings are merely a = mindless=20 accident, a product of blind = chance?=20

Scientists = are in general=20 agreement that, on the basis of calculations, = the Big=20 Bang took place about 17 billion years ago. All = the=20 matter making up the universe was created from=20 nothingness but with the wonderful design that = we talked=20 about in the first two chapters. Nevertheless, = the=20 universe that emerged from the Big Bang could = have been=20 much different from the one that did = emerge=96ours.

For example, = if the=20 values of four fundamental forces were = different, the=20 universe would have consisted of only radiation = and=20 become a tissue of light with no stars, = galaxies, human=20 beings, or anything else. Thanks to the = extraordinary=20 perfect balance of those four forces, = "atoms"=96the=20 building-blocks of that which is called = "matter"=96came=20 into being.

Scientists = are also in=20 general agreement that the first two simplest=20 elements=96hydrogen and helium=96began to form = during the=20 first fourteen seconds after the Big Bang. The = elements=20 were formed as a result of a reduction in the = universal=20 entropy that was causing matter to scatter = everywhere.=20 In other words, at first the universe was just = an=20 amassing of hydrogen and helium atoms. If it had = remained so, again there could have been no = stars,=20 planets, stones, soil, trees, or human beings. = It would=20 have been a lifeless universe consisting of only = those=20 two elements.

Carbon, the = fundamental=20 element of life, is a much heavier element than = hydrogen=20 and helium. How did it come into being?

Searching for = an answer=20 to this question, scientists stumbled upon one = of the=20 most surprising discoveries of this century. =

The = Structure of the=20 Elements

Chemistry is a science = that deals=20 with the composition, structure, and properties = of=20 substances and with the transformations that = they=20 undergo. The bedrock of modern chemistry is the = periodic=20 table of elements. First laid out by Russian = chemist=20 Dmitry Ivanovich Mendeleyev, the elements in the = periodic table are arranged according to their = atomic=20 structures. Hydrogen occupies the first place in = the=20 table because it is the simplest of all the = elements,=20 consisting of only one proton in its nucleus and = one=20 electron revolving around it.

Protons are = subatomic=20 particles that carry a positive electrical = charge in the=20 nucleus of an atom. Helium, with two protons, = occupies=20 the second place in the periodic table. Carbon = has six=20 protons and oxygen has eight. All the elements = differ in=20 the number of protons that they contain.

Another = particle present=20 in the nucleus of an atom is the neutron. Unlike = protons, neutrons do not carry an electrical = charge:=20 they are neutral in other words, hence their = name.

The third = basic particle=20 of which atoms are composed is the electron, = which has a=20 negative electrical charge. In every atom, the = number of=20 protons and electrons is the same. Unlike = protons and=20 neutrons however, electrons are not located in = the=20 nucleus. Instead, they move around the nucleus = at a very=20 high speed that keeps the positive and negative = charges=20 of the atom apart.

The = differences in atomic=20 structure (the numbers of protons/electrons) are = what=20 make the elements different from one another. =

A crucial = rule of=20 (classical) chemistry is that elements cannot be = transformed into one another. Changing iron = (with=20 twenty-six protons) into silver (with eighteen) = would=20 require removing eight protons from the nucleus. = But=20 protons are bound together by the strong nuclear = force=20 and the number of protons in a nucleus can be = changed=20 only in nuclear reactions. Yet all the reactions = that=20 take place under terrestrial conditions are = chemical=20 reactions that depend on electron exchange and = that do=20 not effect the nucleus. 

In the = Middle Ages=20 there was a "science" called alchemy=96the = forerunner of=20 modern chemistry. Alchemists, unaware of the = periodic=20 table or the atomic structures of the elements, = thought=20 it was possible to transform one element into = another.=20 (A favorite object of pursuit, for reasons that = should=20 be apparent, was trying to turn iron into gold.) = We now=20 know that what the alchemists were trying to do = is=20 impossible under normal conditions such as exist = on=20 Earth: The temperatures and pressures required = for such=20 a transformation to take place are too enormous = to=20 achieve in any terrestrial laboratory. But it is = possible if you have the right place to do it = in.=20
And the right place, it turns out, is in the = hearts=20 of stars.


Red giants are huge stars = about=20 fifty times bigger than our sun. Deep = within these=20 giants, an extraordinary process takes=20 place.

The = Universe's=20 Alchemy Labs: Red Giants

The = temperature required=20 to overcome the reluctance of nuclei to change = is nearly=20 10 million degrees Celsius. This is why = "alchemy" in the=20 real sense takes place only in stars. In = medium-sized=20 stars like the Sun, the enormous energy being = radiated=20 is the result of hydrogen being fused into = helium.

Keeping this = brief review=20 of the chemistry of elements in mind, let us = return to=20 the immediate aftermath of the Big Bang. We = mentioned=20 that only helium and hydrogen atoms existed in = the=20 universe after the Big Bang. Astronomers believe = that=20 solar-type stars (of which the Sun is one) are = formed as=20 a result of nebulae (clouds) of hydrogen and = helium gas=20 being compressed until the hydrogen-to-helium=20 thermonuclear reaction gets started. So now we = have=20 stars. But our universe is still lifeless. For = life,=20 heavier elements=96oxygen and carbon = specifically=96are=20 required. There needs to be another process = whereby=20 hydrogen and helium can be converted into still = other=20 elements. 

The=20 "manufacturing-plants" of these heavy elements = it turns=20 out are the red giants=96a class of stars that = are fifty=20 times bigger than the Sun.

Helium nucleus=20 Carbon=20 nucleus The=20 extraordinarily unstable isotope of = beryllium that=20 is formed in red giants. Normal=20 beryllium as found on Earth.=20


Red giants=20 are much hotter than solar-type stars and this = characteristic enables them to do something = other=20 stars cannot: They convert helium into carbon. = Nevertheless, even for a red giant this is not = easy.=20 As the astronomer Greenstein says: "Even now, = when the=20 answer (as to how they do it) is well in hand, = the=20 method they employ seems astonishing."2=20

Helium's = atomic weight is=20 2: that is, it has two protons in its nucleus. = Carbon's=20 atomic weight is 6. In the fantastically high=20 temperatures of red giants, three helium atoms = are fused=20 into a carbon atom. This is the "alchemy" that = supplied=20 the universe with its heavier elements after the = Big=20 Bang.

But as we = said: it's not=20 easy. It's nearly impossible to persuade two = helium=20 atoms to join together and quite impossible for = three.=20 So how do the six protons needed for carbon get=20 together?

It's a = two-step process.=20 First, two helium atoms are fused into an = intermediary=20 element with four protons and four neutrons. = Next, a=20 third helium is added to this intermediary = element to=20 make a carbon atom with six protons and six = neutrons.=20

The = intermediary element=20 is beryllium. Beryllium occurs naturally on = Earth but=20 the beryllium that occurs in red giants is = different in=20 a crucially important way: It consists of four = protons=20 and four neutrons, whereas terrestrial beryllium = has=20 five neutrons. "Red-giant beryllium" is a = slightly=20 different version. It's what's called an = "isotope" in=20 chemistry. 

Now comes the = real=20 surprise. The "red-giant" isotope beryllium = turns out to=20 be incredibly unstable. Scientists have studied = this=20 isotope for years and discovered that once it = has=20 formed, it breaks down again in just = 0.000000000000001=20 second.

How is this = unstable=20 beryllium isotope, which forms and disintegrates = in such=20 a short time, able to unite with a helium atom = to become=20 a carbon atom? It is like trying to lay a third = brick on=20 two other bricks that shoot away from each other = in=20 0.000000000000001 second if they chance to come = atop one=20 another, and form a construction in this = way. 

How does this = process=20 take place in red giants? Physicists scratched = their=20 heads over this puzzle for decades without = coming up=20 with an answer. The American astrophysicist = Edwin=20 Salpeter finally discovered a clue to the = mystery in the=20 concept of "atomic resonance".


Resonance and=20 Double Resonance

Resonance is defined as = the=20 harmony of frequencies (vibrations) of two = different=20 materials.

A simple = example from=20 ordinary experience will give us an idea of what = physicists mean by "atomic resonance". Imagine = yourself=20 and a child at a playground where there are = swings. The=20 child sits on the swing and you give him a push = to get=20 him started. To keep the swing moving, you have = to keep=20 pushing it from behind. But the timing of these = pushes=20 is important. Each time the swing approaches = you, you=20 have to apply the force of the push just at the = right=20 moment: when the swing is at the highest point = of its=20 motion towards you. If you push too soon, the = result is=20 a collision that disturbs the rhythmic momentum = of the=20 swing; if you push too late, the effort is = wasted=20 because the swing is already moving away from = you. In=20 other words, the frequency of your pushes must = be in=20 harmony with the frequency of the swing's = approaches to=20 you.

Physicists refer to such = a "harmony=20 of frequencies" as "resonance". The swing has = a=20 frequency: for example it reaches you every = 1.7=20 seconds. Using your arms you push it every 1.7 = seconds. Of course if you want, you can change = the=20 frequency of the swing's motion, but if you = do, you=20 have to change the frequency of the pushes as = well,=20 otherwise the swing will not swing right.3=20

Just as two or more = moving bodies=20 can resonate, resonance can also occur when = one moving=20 body causes motion in another. This type of = resonance=20 is often seen in musical instruments and is = called=20 "acoustic resonance". It can occur, for = example, among=20 two finely-tuned violins. If one of these = violins is=20 played in the same room as the other, the = strings of=20 the second will vibrate and produce a sound = even=20 though nobody is touching it. Because both = instruments=20 have been precisely tuned to the same = frequency, a=20 vibration in one causes a vibration in the = other.4=20

The = resonances in these=20 two examples are simple ones and are easy to = keep the=20 track of. There are other resonances in physics = that are=20 not simple at all and in the case of atomic = nuclei, the=20 resonances can be quite complex and sensitive. =

Every atomic nucleus has = a natural=20 energy level that physicists have been able to = identify after lengthy study. These energy = levels are=20 quite different from one another but a few = rare=20 instances of resonance between atomic nuclei = have been=20 observed. When such resonance occurs, the = motions of=20 the nuclei are in harmony with one another = like our=20 examples of the swing and violin. The = important point=20 of this is that the resonance expedites = nuclear=20 reactions that can affect the nuclei.5=20

Investigating = how carbon=20 was made by red giants, Edwin Salpeter suggested = that=20 there must be a resonance between helium and = beryllium=20 nuclei that facilitated the reaction. This = resonance, he=20 said, made it easier for helium atoms to fuse = into=20 beryllium and this could account for the = reaction in red=20 giants. Subsequent research however failed to = support=20 this idea.

Fred Hoyle = was the second=20 astronomer to address this question. Hoyle took=20 Salpeter's idea a step further, introducing the = idea of=20 "double resonance". Hoyle said that there had to = be two=20 resonances: one that caused two heliums to fuse = into=20 beryllium and one that caused the third helium = atom join=20 this unstable formation. Nobody believed Hoyle. = The idea=20 of such a precise resonance occurring once was = hard=20 enough to accept; that it should occur twice was = unthinkable. Hoyle pursued his research for = years and in=20 the end he proved that his idea was right: there = really=20 was a double resonance taking place in the red = giants.=20 At the exact moment two helium atoms resonated = in union,=20 a beryllium atom appeared in the = 0.000000000000001=20 second needed to produce carbon. George = Greenstein=20 describes why this double resonance is indeed an = extraordinary mechanism: 

Fred = Hoyle was=20 the first to discover the amazing = equilibrium of=20 nuclear reactions taking place in red = giants.=20 Although an atheist, Hoyle admitted that = this=20 balance could not be explained by chance = and that=20 it was a deliberate = arrangement.

There are three quite = separate=20 structures in this story-helium, beryllium, = and=20 carbon-and two quite separate resonances. It = is hard=20 to see why these nuclei should work together = so=20 smoothly=85Other nuclear reactions do not = proceed by=20 such a remarkable chain of lucky breaks=85It = is like=20 discovering deep and complex resonances = between a car,=20 a bicycle, and a truck. Why should such = disparate=20 structures mesh together so perfectly? Upon = this our=20 existence, and that of every life form in the=20 universe, depends.6

In = the years that=20 followed it was discovered that other elements = like=20 oxygen are also formed as a result of such = amazing=20 resonances. A zealous materialist, Fred Hoyle's=20 discovery of these "extraordinary transactions" = forced=20 him to admit in his book Galaxies, Nuclei and = Quasars,=20 that such double resonances had to be the result = of=20 design and not coincidence. 7=20 In another article he wrote:

If you wanted to produce = carbon and=20 oxygen in roughly equal quantities by stellar=20 nucleosynthesis, these are the two levels you = would=20 have to fix, and your fixing would have to be = just=20 about where these levels are actually found to = be=85A=20 commonsense interpretation of the facts = suggests that=20 a super intellect has monkeyed with physics, = as well=20 as chemistry and biology, and that there are = no blind=20 forces worth speaking about in nature. The = numbers one=20 calculates from the facts seem to me so = overwhelming=20 as to put this conclusion almost beyond = question.8

Hoyle = declared=20 that the inescapable conclusion of this plain = truth=20 should not go unnoticed by other = scientists. 
I=20 do not believe that any scientist who examined = the=20 evidence would fail to draw the inference that = the laws=20 of nuclear physics have been deliberately = designed with=20 regard to the consequences they produce inside = the=20 stars.9=20
