The Bible &=20 The Talmud

 

A = Personal=20 Note: Although the research on Hebrew Roots = issue has=20 encompassed material that I have found disturbing, it = in no=20 way has changed my feelings about those involved, = especially=20 the Jewish people. I hold no anger, resentment or = animosity=20 toward any. However, I have felt a deep sense of grief = because=20 of many things. What I feel very strongly is that all = the=20 issues addressed were dealt with at the cross. Truly, = His=20 grace is sufficient. What I do have, is a strong sense = or=20 desire to see deceptions--regardless of who propagates = them--exposed. This issue is very large and complex. = Not all=20 that is said about one group's views can necessarily = be=20 applied to all. However, an overview must be = established and=20 various thoughts and attitudes tested to Scripture. I = do not=20 necessarily agree with the theological positions of = some=20 sources I quote from. In fact, some I strongly = disagree with.=20 However, I have tried to establish all pertinent facts = with at=20 least one or more other sources, each saying the same = or=20 similar things and then have chosen which stated the = issue=20 with the most clarity.

Overview:

This = article explores=20 the teaching of the Talmud in relation to the Bible. = It=20 evaluates the push for other transcripts other than = the=20 Received Greek Texts, and evaluates the teachings of , = for=20 example, Peter Michas and Jacob Prasch, and other = advocates of=20 Hebrew translations who postulate that the Greek = manuscripts=20 hold error. 

It = evaluates the need=20 for Midrash, Mishnah, Haggadah, Halakah, and the use = of the=20 "Ancient Wisdom" versus the teaching of the New = Testament and=20 the sufficiency of Scripture with the teaching of the = Holy=20 Spirit. It shows who the scribes and Pharisees were, = the=20 Biblical view of oral traditions and the difference = between=20 New Testament beliefs versus Global Halacha and = acceptance of=20 the oral traditions.

 2 Peter = 1:=20 20-21:

"Knowing this = first, that no=20 prophecy of the scripture is of any private = interpretation.=20 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of = man:=20 but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the = Holy=20 Ghost."

What of the Bible? = Is Scripture=20 sufficient in itself and considered by the Hebrew = Roots=20 ministries to be the inerrant Word of God? Are the Old = and New=20 Testament the complete revelation of God's will for = the=20 salvation of man? Do they constitute the divine and = only rule=20 of Christian faith and practice? Or is it true as = stated by=20 Peter Michas that we must return to the Hebrew or = Aramaic=20 writings and the Oral traditions of Judaism for New = Testament=20 doctrine?

"Is The New = Testament=20 Hebrew/Aramaic or Greek? by Peter=20 Michas"

"=85since existing = New Testament=20 manuscripts are Greek, written to express Hebraic = concepts,=20 why be limited to the Greek or English translations = when we=20 have Hebrew,=85 The New Testament is in the pattern = of the=20 Jewish traditional work of Torah, Mishnah, Haggadah, = Halakah, Talmud and Midrash, but inspired by God = Himself for=20 the common people."

"These Hebraic = works as well=20 as the Inspired Scriptures were quoted from by Jesus = and all=20 the writers of the New Testament=85 to have full=20 comprehension, we must read the scriptures in the = proper=20 Hebraic context=85 the New Testament is = Hebrew/Aramaic and not=20 Greek or English in origin or thought=85 Most all of = the=20 Judaic writings have been preserved for us and now=20 translated into proper English directly from the = Hebrew, as=20 well as explained in true Hebraic manner=85"=20 1.

In an email = dated1/19/99, James=20 Trimm of the "Society for the Advancement of = Nazarene=20 Judaism" responded to questions regarding the = sources of=20 manuscripts for the Semitic New Testament Project = (SNTP), on=20 which he is working.

"=85It is such a = delight to=20 spend so much time buried in the text in its = original=20 language... The SNTP is based on Hebrew and Aramaic = rather=20 than Greek manuscripts=85the Aramaic text makes much = more=20 sense than the Greek text=85This is just one example = from this=20 project which I believe will revolutionize New = Testament=20 understanding=85"

2 Peter=20 3:16:

" As also in all = his epistles,=20 speaking in them of these things; in which are some = things=20 hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned = and=20 unstable wrest, as they do also the other = scriptures, unto=20 their own destruction."

Orthodox scholars = agree that the=20 New Testament was originally written in = Greek.

"The New Testament = writings=20 were composed in Greek." 2.

Unger's Bible = Dictionary=20 states:

"Despite the = critical claim=20 that Matthew wrote the gospel in Aramaic, this = contention=20 has never been proved. If there was an Aramaic = original it=20 disappeared at a very early age. The Greek gospel, = which is=20 now the Church's heritage, was almost beyond doubt = written=20 in Matthew's lifetime." 3.

"By whom the = gospel of Matthew=20 was given in our present Greek form is unknown, but = probably=20 by himself. The consensus of critical scholars is = that it is=20 not a mere translation but an original composition." = 4.

John=20 17:17:

"Sanctify them = through thy=20 truth: thy word is truth."

Hyam Maccoby, = grandson to the=20 famous Rabbi Haim Zundel Maccoby, the Polish = Kamenitzer=20 Maggid, [spirit guide], propounds the view of Peter = Michas and=20 other Hebrew Roots advocates that the Gospels were = written in=20 an era of extreme prejudice and hatred towards the = Jews and=20 that this anti-Semitism was reflected in the New = Testament.=20 Hyam Maccoby impugns the accounts of Mark and = Luke:

"=85 the Gospel of = Mark, =85 the=20 Gospel in which the lines of policy were laid down = by the=20 Gentile-Christian Church; a policy of condemnations = of the=20 Jews as an accursed people."

"=85What had been = the history of=20 the Christian Church since the death of Jesus? The = bulk of=20 the New Testament which purports to give this = history is The=20 Acts of the Apostles; but this is a = Gentile-Christian=20 composition written about 100 A.D. by Luke, giving a = Gentile-Christian slant to the events of those = years. By=20 reading between the lines of Acts, by following = using a=20 supplementary sources such as Josephus, the Talmud = and early=20 Christian historians, we can reconstruct the true = history of=20 the early church." 5.

Scripture tells us = many times=20 that God's Word is pure.

Psalm=20 12:6,7:

"The words of the = Lord are=20 pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, = purified=20 seven times. Thou shalt keep them, O Lord, thou = shalt=20 preserve them from this generation for=20 ever."

Error in the Bible

Other HR and related = groups make=20 the excuse that there is error in the Bible, which = must be=20 eliminated. Promoting their NEW Translation called = "The=20 Book of Yahweh," the House of Yahweh stated this = regarding=20 the Scriptures,

"=85 Many phrases = have been=20 deliberately mistranslated in order to hide their = true=20 meaning, so that Scripture would not bring to light = the=20 deceitful teaching of the established, and popular,=20 religious organizations. The alteration of = Yahweh=92s=20 Scriptures, either by untranslating or = mistranslating, has=20 caused the True Work, which His Prophets spoke of, = to be=20 hidden in most translations of the Scriptures, and = has been=20 damaging to those who are searching the Scriptures = for the=20 way to Eternal Life."

"However, the most = damaging=20 error in all the Scriptures, was the error of = removing=20 YAHWEH=92S NAME from the very scriptures He inspired = to be=20 written, and writing in its place the pagan titles = of GODS,=20 and SATAN HIMSELF! Because of this grave error, = those who=20 are calling upon the names of gods and Satan, even = though=20 ignorantly, are actually worshiping the gods and = Satan=97for=20 they are not calling upon, and with, The NAME of = YAHWEH!"=20 6.

Psalm=20 119:104,105

"Through thy = precepts I get=20 understanding: therefore I hate every false way. Thy = word is=20 a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my=20 path."

In his article, = Explaining=20 the Midrash, Jacob Prasch stated that we need the=20 knowledge of the Midrash and Jewish thought to rightly = understand the Bible.

"=85But Matthew = appears to take=20 the passage out of all reasonable context and twist = it into=20 talking about Jesus. We have to ask, is Matthew = wrong? or is=20 there something wrong with our Protestant way of=20 interpreting the Bible? There is nothing wrong with = Matthew,=20 and there is nothing wrong with the New Testament. = But there=20 is something wrong with our Protestant = mentality=85They were=20 reading a Jewish book as if it were a Greek book=85 = The first=20 step is going back to reading the Bible as a Jewish = book,=20 instead of as a Greek one." = 7.

Referring to the = Midrash, Mr.=20 Prasch said:

" It takes the = wisdom of the=20 ancients to really understand these things."=20 8.

"Wisdom of the = Ancients" bears=20 an uneasy resemblance to Ancient Wisdom, which is the = esoteric=20 term used by occultists for Gnosis or Mysticism. = William=20 Kingsland wrote of this wisdom in his book, " THE = GNOSIS OR=20 ANCIENT WISDOM IN THE CHRISTIAN SCRIPTURES: OR THE = WISDOM IN A=20 MYSTERY":

"...when I speak = of the=20 Gnosis, I do not refer specifically to the Greek or = Coptic=20 variety, but to that 'Ancient Wisdom' which can be=20 discovered as a thread of gold running through = allegories=20 and myths and fables from the very earliest times of = which=20 we have any literary records, and which has more = recently=20 been somewhat more fully expounded to us by some of = the=20 existing Masters of that Wisdom." = 9.

Are Christians = unable to=20 understand the Bibles teachings without this Ancient=20 Wisdom?

Psalm 19:=20 7-11:

"The law of the = Lord is=20 perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the = Lord is=20 sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the = Lord are=20 right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the = Lord is=20 pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is = clean,=20 enduring forever: the judgments of the Lord are true = and=20 righteous altogether. More to be desired are they = than gold,=20 yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey = and the=20 honeycomb. Moreover by them is thy servant warned: = and in=20 keeping them there is great = reward."

 What about = other sources=20 of Jewish thought regarding the Messiah, the kingdom = of God,=20 sin and salvation? How do teachings expounded from the = "Ancient Wisdom" compare with the New Testament = teachings?=20 What differences may be found between the inspired Old = and New=20 Testament and the "Mishnah, Haggadah, Halakah, Talmud = and=20 Midrash?" Has the Holy Spirit equally inspired these=20 sources?

Perhaps Peter Michas = is correct=20 in saying that we need to understand the original = concepts=20 from history and as they are taught now = =97particularly from=20 these books and the Jewish people themselves. = Obviously, they=20 would hold the keys to the Hebrew Roots of = Christianity as=20 taught by the Jewish sages.

Avi ben Mordechai, = an Orthodox=20 Sephardic Jew, concurs with Hebrew Roots teachers that = the=20 ancient Jewish teachers of the Law hold the=20 answers:

"=85Since Sha=92ul = followed=20 Messiah Y=92shua, who also taught the Oral and = Written Torah,=20 I submit (at this time in my life) that we should be = following in the footsteps of Judaism=92s great = teachers of=20 G-d=92s Law,=85 I believe that Judaism=92s ancient = scholars and=20 sages were far more knowledgeable on the Oral = Traditions=20 than we could ever hope to be." = 10.

In other words, the = rabbinical=20 scholars are saying much the same thing as the leaders = of the=20 Hebrew Roots/Messianic movements. According to these = eminent=20 scholars, the Bible is in error and insufficient in = itself,=20 and therefore not easily or correctly understood = without the=20 aid of select knowledge and insight from the written = and oral=20 traditions of the Hebrew rabbis and scribes of old. = Among the=20 ancient Jewish writings which we are urged to study, = the=20 Talmud is regarded by the Jewish people as more = important than=20 even the Scriptures.

We are reminded in = 1=20 Corinthians 2:5:

"That your faith = should not=20 stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of=20 God."

James=20 1:5:

"If any of you = lack wisdom,=20 let him ask of God, that giveth to all men = liberally, and=20 upbraideth not; and it shall be given=20 him."

Primacy of the Talmud

Author, Nesta = Webster quotes=20 Talmud translator, Michael Rodkinson's view of the = importance=20 of the Talmud in Jewish life:

" The modern Jew = is the=20 product of the Talmud."=B9 = 11a.

She goes on to = mention the=20 lesser importance of Scripture given by the = Talmud:

" The Talmud = itself accords to=20 the Bible only a secondary place. Thus the Talmudic = treatise=20 Soferim says: 'The Bible is like water, the Mischna = is like=20 wine, and the Gemarah is like spiced wine.'"=20 11.

One can verify these = statements=20 in the Talmudic treatise Soferim, in the tract=20 Sopherim XV, 7, fol.13b. This teaching = regarding the=20 inferior status of the Bible is echoed in the tract = Babha=20 Metsia, fol. 33a:

"Those who devote = themselves=20 to reading the Bible exercise a certain virtue, but = not very=20 much; those who study the Mischnah exercise = virtue=20 for which they will receive a reward; those, = however, who=20 take upon themselves to study the Gemarah = exercise=20 the highest virtue. " 12.

The author, Rev. = I.B. Pranaitis,=20 reiterates the high esteem with which the Talmud and = its=20 writers are held, either placing it on a level with = Scripture=20 or surpassing it:

"In the tract=20 Erubhin, f.13b, where it is related that = there was=20 a difference of opinion between the two schools of = Hillel=20 and Schamai, it is concluded = that:

"The words of = both are the=20 words of the living = God."

In the book = Mizbeach,=20 cap. V, we find the following = opinion:

"There is nothing = superior to=20 the Holy Talmud." "Contemporary defenders of the = Talmud=20 speak of it almost in the same way."=20 13.

"=85The following is = a well-known=20 and highly praised opinion in the writings of the=20 Rabbis:

"My son, give heed = to the=20 words of the scribes rather than to the words of the = law."

The reason for this = is found in=20 the tract Sanhedrin X, 3, f.88b:

"He who = transgresses the words=20 of the scribes sins more gravely than the = transgressors of=20 the words of the law." 14.

From the Babylonian = Talmud we=20 read that rabbis can debate God---and win:

Baba Mezia 59b. A = rabbi=20 debates God and defeats Him. God admits the = rabbi
won the=20 debate. 15.

Maimonides defines = the various=20 ways one would be considered a denier of the Law, = meaning not=20 the Bible, but the oral law as set down by the=20 sages:

Rabbi Maimonides, = in Hilkhoth=20 Teschubhah (III, 8) gives the list of those who are=20 considered as denying the Law: "There are three = classes of=20 people who deny the Law of the Torah: (1) Those who = say that=20 the Torah was not given by God, at least one verse = or one=20 word of it, and who say that it was all the work of = Moses;=20 (2) Those who reject the explanation of the Torah, = namely,=20 the Oral Law of the Mischnah, and do not recognize = the=20 authority of the Doctors of the Law, like the = followers of=20 Tsadok (Sadducees) and Baithos; (3) Those who say = that God=20 changed the Law for another New Law, and that the = Torah no=20 longer has any value, although they do not deny that = it was=20 given by God, as the Christians and the Turks = believe. All=20 of these deny the Law of the Torah."=20 16.

Scribes and Pharisees

Who are the scribes = whose words=20 or oral law must be listened to and obeyed above all = the=20 written law? Quoting again from Hyam Maccoby=92s, = Revolution=20 in Judaea, is the following explanation of the = terms=20 Pharisee, Sadducee, scribes and rabbis, at the time of = Christ.

"These [the = Pharisees] were=20 the members of the body of =91Comrades=92 (Haverim) = as they=20 called themselves. Their leaders were called =91Wise = Men=92=20 (Hahamin), and they were later given the title = =91Master"=20 (Rabbi) before their names. These leaders were also=20 sometimes known as the =91Scribes=92 after the title = of Ezra and=20 his followers in late Biblical times. Pharisees, in = fact,=20 regarded Ezra as the founder of their movement, and = they=20 regarded themselves as the heirs of the Prophetic=20 tradition." 17.

The term Pharisee = was used at=20 the time of Jesus, and eventually became replaced = completely=20 with rabbi, who was often a lay teacher. Rabbi Maccoby = explains the differences between the Pharisees and = Sadducees=20 at the time of Christ.

"The central = religious=20 distinction between the Pharisees and the Sadducees = was on=20 the question of the =91Oral Law=92. The Pharisees = held that in=20 addition to the revealed word of God in Scripture ( = i.e. the=20 Old Testament, as Christians later called, and = especially=20 the five books of Moses known as the Torah or = =91Teaching=92)=20 there was an oral tradition consisting of = interpretations=20 and enactments supplementing and developing the = Written=20 Law." 18.

"=85The Sadducees, = on the other=20 hand, held that the whole of Judaism lay in the = Written Law=20 which was a closed and final revelation with no need = of=20 interpretation or development. The Sadducees, = ...wanted to=20 keep Judaism simple. They wanted it to be centered = around=20 three great institutions, the Scripture, the = Priesthood, and=20 the Temple=85" 19.

Mr. Maccoby goes on = to develop=20 the Pharisaical view of the Torah as a dynamic = document,=20 subject to new interpretations by themselves, = according to the=20 Oral Law:

"=85 To the = Pharisees, however,=20 this policy was, in their own graphic phrase, =91to = put Torah=20 into a corner=92. [B.Kiddushin, 66a.(Talmud)] The = Torah was to=20 them, a living thing which must continually = encounter and=20 grapple with new circumstances, thus, giving rise to = new=20 decisions which became part of the developing Oral = Law. This=20 does not mean the Pharisees regarded the Bible as = imperfect.=20 It was the Word of God, revealed to Moses and the = Prophets.=20 But new circumstances were continually drawing out = of it new=20 depths of meaning; its content was inexhaustible. = This=20 growing knowledge of the possibilities of the Torah, = revealed through time in the processes of history, = was the=20 Oral Law. In other words, the place of the Torah was = =91not in=20 heaven, but in the hands of men=92; [B.B.Metz, 59b. = (Talmud)]=20 and the Oral Law was thus the working, human reality = of the=20 divine revelation." 20.

"The Pharisees, = however,=20 always claimed that the Oral Law, of which they were = supporters and champions, went back to the origins = of=20 Judaism and that the Sadducees, in denying the Oral = Law,=20 were heretics who were attempting to abolish a = fundamental=20 religious principle. " 21.

In the volume, = Josephus, the=20 historian, also contrasts the views of the Pharisees = and=20 Sadducees regarding the Oral Law:

"=85the Pharisees = have delivered=20 to the people a great many observances by succession = from=20 their fathers, which are not written in the law of = Moses;=20 and it is for this reason that the Sadducees reject = them,=20 and say that we are to esteem those observances to = be=20 obligatory which are in the written word, and not to = observe=20 what are derived from the tradition of our = forefathers. "=20 22.

In defense and = support of the=20 Pharisees, Hyam Maccoby adds this tribute to their=20 preservation and multiplying of religious rituals and=20 traditions:

"The Pharisees = added new=20 Festivals (Chanukah and Purim) to the Jewish = religious year;=20 they added to the canon of Scripture=85they added = new doctrine=20 to Judaism=85they added new rites to the Temple = worship=85as=20 well as being continual creators of new prayers and=20 ceremonies in the synagogue." = 23.

Indeed, the = authority and=20 respect attributed to rabbis is so great, that it is = taught=20 within the Babylonian Talmud, section Hagigah 27a., = that no=20 rabbi will go to hell.

The Pharisees and = Sadducees were=20 both believers in the word given by God to man, but = the=20 Pharisees added extra-Biblical oral teachings as = authority=20 over the written Word of God. They called the = Sadducees=20 heretics for not doing so. Those in the Hebrew Roots = movement=20 parallel the Pharisees in that they look to these=20 extra-Biblical works for their guidance---and wish all = to=20 follow suit.

Jesus refuted the = teachings of=20 the Sadducees:

Mark=20 12:24:

"And Jesus = answering said unto=20 them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not = the=20 scriptures, neither the power of = God?"

Exclusiveness of the = Talmud

Why would the = leaders of the=20 Hebrew Roots, Nazarene movements want us to study the = Talmud,=20 and so on, when the Talmud itself teaches that it's = precepts=20 are only for the Jews??

P.L.B. Drach states = in his "=20 De l' Harmonie entre l'Eglise et la = Synagogue,"

"=85 the Talmud is = not a law of=20 righteousness for all mankind, but a meticulous code = applying to the Jew alone ....In the Talmud and ... = as Drach=20 points out, "the precepts of justice, of equity, of = charity=20 towards one=92s neighbor, are not only not = applicable with=20 regard to the Christian, but constitute a crime in = anyone=20 who would act differently ... The Talmud expressly = forbids=20 one to save a non-Jew from death, ...to restore lost = goods,=20 etc., to him, to have pity on him."=20 24. 

The exclusiveness of = the Talmud=20 is commonly understood among the Jews. In the footnote = regarding these quotes it is noted that Drach = was:

"Quoting the = treatise=20 Aboda-Zara, folio 13 verso, and folio 20 recto; also = treatise Baba Kamna, folio 29 verso. Drach adds: "We = could=20 multiply these quotations to = infinity"

It should be noted = that Mr.=20 Drachs knowledge comes firsthand. = Accordingly,

"=85The Jewish = Encyclop=E6dia has=20 an article on Drach in which it says he was brought = up in a=20 Talmudic school=85" = 25.

Furthermore the = Talmudic view of=20 the Gospels and those who own them are as = follows:

" = In the=20 Talmud those who possess books called the Gospels = are=20 heretics [Minim]. Thus in Schabbath (116a) it says: = "Rabbi=20 Meir calls the books of the Minim Aven Gilaion = [iniquitous=20 volumes] because they call them Gospels." 26. =

What Scripture = supports the idea=20 that we must hold to Hebrew thought that the Gospels = are=20 iniquitous and those who believe them are heretics? Is = this=20 what Larry Rowland means by "understanding in order to = grasp=20 all that scripture has to offer"? Is this oral = tradition=20 committed to the writings of the Talmud, to be = embraced as=20 truth and supporting what Christ himself = taught?

Or did Jesus say in=20 Matthew 15:6:

"Thus have ye made = the=20 commandment of God of none effect by your=20 tradition."

James=20 2:9:

"But if ye have = respect to=20 persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law = as=20 trangressors."

Considering the = great importance=20 of the Talmud in Hebrew thought and Hebrew Roots = teachings, we=20 need to understand exactly what the Talmud is and what = it=20 contains.

The Talmud

 Many involved = in Judaism=20 and the Hebrew Roots movement embrace the idea that = the Talmud=20 is divinely inspired and of benefit to Christianity. = In the=20 past, not surprisingly, some Jews have viewed the = Talmud as an=20 obstacle, preventing reconciliation between the=20 groups.

We know that many = people, Jewish=20 and non-Jewish, do not consider the New Testament to = be of=20 God.

However, Avi ben = Mordechai=20 redefines the gospel as the Oral Torah:

"=85When Paul = says, "I marvel=20 that ye are so soon removed from him that called you = into=20 the grace of Christ unto another gospel" you need to = see the=20 definition of Gospel in light of the Mishnah of Mark = 1:1ff.=20 It's a direct connection to the Torah of Moshe- Oral = and=20 Written=85" 27.

It has been = established that the=20 oral traditions of the Pharisees, which were committed = to the=20 Talmud, take authority and precedence over the Old = Testament,=20 as Judaism's holiest book. The Talmud contains = material=20 accumulated over several centuries. A complete = collection=20 consists of 63 books in 524 chapters. The main = elements of the=20 Talmud are the Mishna, the Gemara (Babylonian and = Palestinian)=20 and the Midrashim or Midrash. The Mishna and Gemara = compose=20 the Jerusalem Talmud, which was revised in the third = to fifth=20 century and later named the Babylonian Talmud, the one = commonly used today. Credit is given to Rabbi Judah = the Prince=20 for the compilation of the Mishna around 200 = A.D.

The Talmud itself = confirms,=20 again, the authority of the Talmud teachings in Erubin = 21b=20 (Soncino edition):

"My son, be more = careful in=20 the observance of the words of the Scribes than in = the words=20 of the Torah (Old Testament)." = 28.

In Judaism on = Trial, Hyam=20 Maccoby quoted Rabbi Yehiel ben Joseph, who insists = that it is=20 indispensable to understanding Scripture:

"Further, without = the Talmud,=20 we would not be able to understand passages in the=20 Bible...God has handed this authority to the sages = and=20 tradition is a necessity as well as scripture. The = Sages=20 also made enactments of their own... anyone who does = not=20 study the Talmud cannot understand Scripture."=20 29.

From Fabre d' = Olivet, author=20 of La Langue He'braique, we learn not = only the=20 true source of the Hebrew Oral Tradition, which is = Egypt,=20 but its future transmission into the great body = of=20 Jewish mysticism called the Kabbalah:

"=85According to = Fabre d'Olivet,=20 Moses, who was learned in all the wisdom of the = Egyptians,=20 "drew from the Egyptian Mysteries a part of the oral = tradition which was handed down through 'the leaders = of the=20 Isrealites."=B9. That such an oral tradition, = distinct from=20 the written word embodied in the Pentateuch, did = descend=20 from Moses and that it was later committed in = writing in the=20 Talmud and the Cabala is the opinion of many Jewish=20 writers." =B2. 30.

From the = "Kabbalah in=20 English", we may glean factual information about = the=20 Hebrew Sacred books, whose Gnostic (hidden) meanings = were=20 later developed into the Kabbalah:

"=85But the = Scripture alone can=20 not show the meanings within. Rabbinic hermeneutics = could=20 find a wealth of meaning in the subtlest details of = the=20 text, a characteristic that Kabbalistic writing took = over=85=20 The Talmud is actually two works in one=85 The core = work is=20 the Mishnah, a codification of Jewish Law from the = second=20 century CE, together with transcriptions of debates, = discussions, and teachings of various sages in the = next two=20 to three centuries, organized around the Mishnah, = called the=20 Gemara. The Talmud thus shares the same structure of = the=20 Mishnah--a tractate by tractate enunciation of = Jewish law;=20 but, being in form the record of oral teaching, the = Gemara=20 wanders far and wide. Regarding the = Midrash, The=20 Kabbalah in English, notes the legendary character = of its=20 content, and further explains the more important = authors and=20 their commentaries.

"=85The Midrash, = stemming from=20 the same period as the Talmud, but more concerned = with=20 supplying context and elaboration of the Biblical = text. Much=20 legendary material is archived here. Midrashim exist = on the=20 Torah, the books of Ruth, Lamentations, = Ecclesiastes,=20 Esther, Song of Songs (together referred to as the = five=20 Megillot), and Psalms. Usually all but the last are = grouped=20 together as Midrash Rabbah, and an multivolume = translation=20 from the Soncino Press is=20 available=85"32.

"Ancillary to this = is Rashi=20 and Rambam. Rashi is Rabbi Shlomo ben Yitzchak, = author of=20 the most important, because most widespread, = commentary on=20 the Bible and the Talmud; even the most uneducated = of Jews=20 in premodern times knew what Rashi said about a = passage in=20 the Bible, and his glosses are to be found on almost = every=20 page of the Talmud=85 His commentary generally = distills the=20 Talmudic teaching, and draws on the Midrash heavily; = and in=20 turn lies at the foundation of many later = commentators=85=20 Rambam is Rabbi Moses ben Maimon (another acronym), = usually=20 called in English by his Greek name, Maimonides. He = wrote=20 the first definitive compilation of Jewish law since = Talmudic times, the Mishneh Torah, but for the = student of=20 Kabbalah it is the Guide for the Perplexed, Moreh = Nebuchim=85"=20 33.

Peter Michas, Jacob = Prasch and=20 others in the Hebrew Roots, also favour the Midrash. = Hyam=20 Maccoby notes that The Haggada of the Midrash is = composed=20 of Jewish fables:

"The Haggada = (found mainly in=20 the Midrash) is the poetical side of Pharisaism, and = comprises folktales, parables, quaint fancies and=20 metaphysical speculations." = 34.

God issues this = warning in the=20 Scriptures found in Titus = 1:14:

" Not giving heed = to Jewish=20 fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the=20 truth."

 Jewish = Education and=20 "Halacha"

 Project = Genesis, found at=20 www.torah.org/info/genesis.html, is connected to such = Hebrew=20 Roots sites as Larry Rowlands, Messengers of Truth. = Part of=20 its purpose includes education about Jewish = roots:

"Project Genesis = promotes=20 further Jewish education about our Jewish roots, as=20 represented in Jewish = sources=85"

According to their = Facts,=20

"Our teachers are = Orthodox, so=20 they approach the tradition from a traditional = perspective=20 (which is logical, after all). But our program so = carefully=20 avoids labels and politics that Conservative and = Reform=20 Rabbis have actively expressed their support of the = program=20 to their congregants and colleagues."=20 35.

The term Halacha is = used=20 frequently when discussing the Midrash, Mishnah and = Talmudic=20 teachings, and needs to be defined. According to one=20 authority,

The traditional viewpoint is that = Halacha=20 should be decided by those who are most knowledgable = in all=20 aspects of Jewish law. Since the Halacha of each = generation=20 is decided by its greatest Torah scholars, and the = Torah=20 doesn't change, there is usually little change in = the=20 Halacha from one generation to the next. The = development of=20 Halacha is most evident when new situations arise = for which=20 rulings must be made, such as the destruction of the = Temple,=20 the development of electricity, and the increasing=20 complexity of modern food processing technology. = Since the=20 non-traditional viewpoint is that the Torah itself = was=20 written by people, both the interpretation of the = Law and=20 its application are re-evaluated in each generation, = using=20 the interpretations of the past to serve primarily = as=20 non-binding guidance in how to continue this = process. The Jewish writer, = Solomon=20 Maimon, wrote in 1792, to expose what he called = "absurd=20 questions" which are discussed with utmost seriousness = and=20 explicit detail in the Talmud.

". . .the oddest = rabbinical=20 conceits are elaborated through many volumes with = the finest=20 dialectic, and absurd questions are discussed with = the=20 highest efforts of intellectual power: for example, = how many=20 white hairs may a red cow have, and yet remain a red = cow;=20 what sort of scabs require this or that = purification;=20 whether a louse or a flea may be killed on the = Sabbath-the=20 first being allowed, while the second is a deadly = sin;=20 whether the slaughter of an animal ought to be = executed at=20 the neck or the tail; whether the high priest put on = his=20 shirt or his hose first; whether the Jabam, that is, = the=20 brother of a man who died childless, being required = by law=20 to marry the widow, is relieved from his obligation = if he=20 falls off a roof and sticks in the mire."=20 40.

Global Unity and the = Halacha

Avi ben Mordechai, = an Orthodox=20 Sephardic Jew, indicates that we need to incorporate = the=20 Jewish "halacha" teachings in order for "believers" to = be=20 unified globally. His intention is that Jewish = teachers and=20 eventually a Jewish high court should be in place in = order to=20 teach us the truth.

"=85As I see it = today=85=20 Nazerean (Messianic) halacha should be in place = to help=20 us as a global community of believers in = Y=92shua=20 HaMashiach properly interpret the written code of = Sinai for=20 the community at-large. Not only is this good = government=20 (i.e., "the kingdom of G-d on earth") but this = is also=20 the commandment of Y=92shua.=85" =

"The council in = Acts Chapter=20 15 led by it Nasi (Prince) Ya=92acov HaTzadeq = (James) and his=20 Av Bet Din (Father of the House of Judgment) Kefa = (Peter),=20 was built on Y=92shua=92s Mishnah and Gemara and on = the=20 principle that biblical Jewish government must = include the=20 halachic jurisdiction of a Bet Din or high court = (=20 Mattityahu 18). Consequently, I believe we have = the=20 responsibility and privilege to establish another = authority=20 like the one recorded in Acts 15, and ideally, it = should be=20 seated in Y=92rushalayim! = "

"=85 first = century=20 halacha is not what it used to be. Furthermore, = since there=20 is no official high court to represent the halachic=20 interests of believers in Y=92shua, what are we to = do with our=20 own disputes, judgments, and need for legal = rulings? Do=20 we turn to the established traditions of the = Sephardim?=20 [Kabbalists] The Ashenazim? [Mystics] The = Conservatives=20 or some other body of Judaism?=85I believe that = Judaism=92s=20 ancient scholars and sages were far more = knowledgeable on=20 the Oral Traditions than we could ever hope to be. = So,=20 what do we do? Where do we stand today since we = do not=20 have our own high court and have not had one for = nearly two=20 millennia?" 41.

Both the Sephardim = and the=20 Ashkenazim are gnostic sects of Judaism. The Sephardim = are=20 credited with the dissemination of the Cabala = throughout=20 Europe after the Jews were expelled from = Spain.

Since the Talmud is = considered=20 to be above the Bible, it behooves us to know what = things it=20 teaches about the very foundations of our Christian = beliefs.=20 Since we are admonished we are not able to understand = the Word=20 of God without it and we need to be taught by Jewish = sages,=20 that is to whom we will turn, to see what is believed = and=20 taught.

I Corinthians=20 1:19:

"For it is = written, I will=20 destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to = nothing=20 the understanding of the prudent."
