To = Embrace=20 Hebrew Roots: Part III

The Talmud &=20 Jesus Christ

 

Since = we are asked to=20 embrace the teachings of the Talmud and various other = writings=20 and teachings of the Jewish people, we should start by = inquiring as to what these teach about our Lord and = Savior,=20 Jesus Christ.

I John 5: 10-=20 13

"He that believeth = on the Son=20 of God hath the witness in himself; he that = believeth not=20 God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not = the=20 record that God gave of his Son. And this is the = record,=20 that God hath given us eternal life; and this life = is in his=20 Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that = hath not=20 the Son hath not life. These things have I written = unto you=20 that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye = may know=20 that ye have eternal life; and that ye may believe = on the=20 name of the Son of God."

From a Jewish = article about=20 Jesus we learn that the Talmud slanders our Savior, = Jesus=20 Christ.

"... the Jewish = Encyclop=9Cdia=20 admits that Jewish legends concerning Jesus are = found in the=20 Talmud and Midrash and in " the life of Jesus ( = Toledot=20 Yeshu) that originated in the Middle Ages. It is the = tendency of all these sources to belittle = the=20 person of Jesus by ascribing to Him illegitimate = birth,=20 magic, and a shameful death. " = 1.

Upon scrutiny one = also finds=20 that Jesus is maligned as a false teacher:

"=85 He [Jesus] is = referred to=20 in the Talmud as Otho Isch- "That man," i.e. the one = who is=20 known to all. In the tract Abhodah Zarah, 6a, we = read:=20 "He is called a Christian who follows the false = teachings=20 of that man, who taught them to celebrate the = feast on=20 the first day of the Sabbath, that is, to worship on = the=20 first day after Sabbath=85Talui, -"The one who was = hanged"=85"=20 2.

Many people believe = that the=20 name for Jesus in Hebrew is Jeschua or Yeshua. = However, the=20 complete,

"=85name in Hebrew = would be=20 Jeschua Hanotsri--Jesus the Nazarene. He is called = Notsri=20 from the city of Nazareth=85 In the Talmud = Christians are also=20 called Notsrim. (Amongst other things). 'Since the = word=20 Jeschua means 'Savior,' the name Jesus rarely occurs = in the=20 Jewish books. It is almost always abbreviated to=20 Jeschu=85"3.

In the Talmud, the = name=20 "Jeschu [Ieschu]" can apparently be=20 translated:

"=85as if it were = composed of=20 the initial letters of the three words Immach SCHemo = Vezikro-- (meaning)- -'May his name be blotted = out.'"=20 4.

That translation = could only be=20 accomplished by the use of Gematria a=20 tool of Kabbalists. Hebrew Roots proponents might say = that=20 these teachings are in the past. However, a review of = various=20 sources reveals the same or similar = teachings.

The Talmud and = Cabala teachings=20 of the Toledot Yeshu-- (or Tolodoth Ieschu or Sepher = Toldoth=20 Jehoshua) represent various teachings regarding = Christ, which=20 may be shocking to many. A brief overview of these = teachings=20 refers to writings that quote the Talmud, (treatise = Sabbath,=20 folio 104, treatise Sanhedrim, folio 107, and Sota, = folio 47)=20 which presents this falsified account of = Jesus:

"...the Toledot = Yeshu relates=20 with the most indecent details that Miriam, a = hairdresser of=20 Bethlehem,4. affianced to a young man named = Jochanan, was=20 seduced by a libertine, Joseph Panther or Pandira, = and gave=20 birth to a son whom she named Johosuah or Jeschu. = According=20 to the Talmudic authors of the Sota and the = Sanhedrim,=20 Jeschu was taken during his boyhood to Egypt, = where=20 he was initiated into the secrets doctrines = of the=20 priests, and on his return to Palestine gave = himself up=20 to the practice of magic. 5. The Toledot Yeshu, = however,=20 goes on to say that on reaching manhood, Jeschu = learnt the=20 secret of his illegitimacy, on account of which he = was=20 driven out of the Synagogue and took refuge for a = time in=20 Galilee."

"Now, there was in = the Temple=20 a stone on which was engraved the = Tetragrammaton=20 [YHWH] or Schem Hamphorasch, that is to say, the=20 Ineffable Name of God; this stone had been = found by=20 King David when the foundations of the Temple were = being=20 prepared and was deposited by him in the Holy of = Holies.=20 Jeschu, knowing this, came from Galilee and, = penetrating=20 into the Holy of Holies, read the Ineffable name, = which he=20 transcribed on to a piece of whom parchment and = concealed in=20 an incision under his skin. By this means he was = able to=20 work miracles and to persuade the people that he was = the son=20 of God foretold by Isaiah. With the aid of = Judas, the=20 Sages of the Synagogue, succeeding in capturing = Jeschu, who=20 was then lead before the Great and Little Sanhedrim, = by whom=20 he was condemned to be stoned to death and finally = hanged."=20 Such is the story of Christ according to the Jewish=20 Kabbalists ..." 5.

This false witness = to the person=20 of Jesus in the Talmud is also confirmed by Rev. I. B. = Pranaitis in his online report, The Talmud = Unmasked: The=20 Secret Rabbinical Teachings Concerning = Christians,=20 and other sources" 6.

Another Jesus?

 In his email = circulated=20 article, "Some Disturbing Aspects of the = So-called=20 'Hebrew Roots' Movement and Their Implications" Andrew = Gould=20 presents the Hebrew Roots doubtful view concerning the = validity of the Gospel account of = Jesus. 

"=85It has been = widely accepted=20 in "Hebrew Roots" circles that Jesus spoke Hebrew = and that=20 the Gospels were originally written in Hebrew. Most = "Hebrew=20 Roots" ministries have been influenced in this = notion by the=20 output of a body called the = Jerusalem=20 School Of Synoptic Research, [JSSR] and most = especially=20 due to the widespread influence of the book = "Understanding=20 The Difficult Words Of Jesus" published by David = Bivin=20 (Director of the JSSR) and his partner Roy Blizzard. = in 1984=20 and reprinted in 1994 and 1995=85"=20 7.

According to the = JSSR, there is=20 a more authentic Life of Jesus than the gospel=20 accounts:

"=85 There was an=20 original Hebrew 'Life of Jesus', = from parts=20 of which our canonical Greek Gospel Texts are mere=20 compilations and translations. The individual words = of the=20 Greek texts that we have are standard Greek = equivalents used=20 to translate Hebrew documents into Greek, therefore = we can=20 retranslate back into Hebrew to discover what Jesus = really=20 said. Failure to appreciate the Hebraic origins = of the=20 Gospels has led to mistranslation, = misinterpretation,=20 spiritually damaging error and doctrinal = confusion."=20 8.

Toledot Yeshu, with = its various=20 components, is one of the Hebrew or Jewish views of = Jesus for=20 those who rejected him as God come in the flesh. It = has been=20 established that the original manuscripts for the New=20 Testament were composed in Greek. If one accepts = Jewish=20 thought regarding who Jesus was according to Judaic = writings=20 and teachings, then Jesus was not divine. It is also = conveyed=20 that He was not viewed as divine by his disciples, but = was=20 viewed as the human Messiah. This subject will be = pursued in=20 the next section on Jewish Thought.

Sir James Frazer, = author of The=20 Golden Bough, mentions that to cast doubts on the = historical=20 reality of Jesus, would be hardly less absurd than it = would be=20 to doubt Mohammed and so on. Other historians = reiterate that=20 the existence of Christ is an historic fact. However, = Rene'=20 Guenon,"who writes with inside knowledge" of Theosophy = in=20 Le Theosophisme (1921), cites a reference to = the=20 occultic Le Lotus of 1887 which states that = Jesus=20 Christ of the New Testament never existed, but the = Jesus of=20 the Talmud did exist:

"... Madam = Blavatsky's=20 writings, on the person of Christ, ... 'For me, = Jesus=20 Christ, that is to say the Man-God of the = Christians, copy=20 of the Avatars of all countries, of the Hindu = Chrishna as of=20 the Egyptian Horus, was never a historical = personage.' Hence=20 the story of His life was merely an allegory founded = on the=20 existence of the 'a personage named Jehoshua born at = Lud.'=20 But elsewhere she asserted that Jesus may have lived = during=20 the Christian era or a century earlier 'as the = Sepher=20 Toldoth Jehoshua indicates.'

"And Madame = Blavatsky went on=20 to say of the savants who deny the historical value = of this=20 legend, that they- 'either lie or talk nonsense. It = is our=20 Masters who affirm it. If the history of Jehoshua = or=20 Jesus Ben Pandera is false, then the whole of the = Talmud,=20 the whole of the Jewish canon law, is false. It = was the=20 disciple of Jehoshua ben Parachai, the fifth = President of=20 the Sanhedrin since Ezra, who re-wrote the Bible = .... This=20 story is much truer than that of the New Testament, = of which=20 history does not say a word." = 9.

Is it possible that = Jehoshua Ben=20 Pandera of the Talmud, who was initiated into the = secrets=20 doctrines and gave himself up to the practice of = magic, is=20 Jehoshua or Yeshua or Jeschu whom the Hebrew Roots = ministries=20 worship?

Please note,=20 the question was asked in regard to the Talmudic = descriptions.=20 Yeshua [short form] = for Joshua or Yehoshua [long = form],=20 translates into Greek as Iesous. Jesus is a = transliteration of=20 Iesous [Greek] and it came about from the = Hebrew/Aramaic. We=20 have no problem with the Name Yeshua, as it means = Salvation in=20 Hebrew. 

What we have a=20 problem with, is those who try to deny the Name of = Jesus, a=20 Name that billions have attained salvation using, and = try to=20 tell other believers that YAHshua, or numerous other=20 variations,  a name that is not even found in the = Old=20 Testament, is the only name of the Messiah. The following is a = portion of an=20 e-mail exchange dated 1/28/99 between the writer and = Uri=20 Marcus of Nehemiah Trustee Covenant Fund:

Vicky=20 Dillen: The name Jesus Christ is = known=20 world wide and synonymous with Christianity.  = That is a=20 historical fact.

Uri = Marcus:=20 Today, yes. 200+ years ago it was synonymous with = nothing.=20 How naive you are of = history...

Vicky = Dillen:=20 The Jewish people reject that Jesus Christ was = divine and=20 believe that He was not God come in the flesh. I = believe on=20 the other hand that He is all of that. Where do you = stand=20 Uri? In the Jewish belief or in what Christ himself = said and=20 what is taught in the New = Testament?

Uri = Marcus: I=20 believe in the Jewish belief. But your definition is = somewhat lacking. Doesn't look like you would = understand it,=20 since its already been explained, and it just goes = right=20 over your head.

From the La = Science des=20 Esprits, by the 19th century occultist, = Eliphas=20 Levi, we learn that the Cabalistic Toledot Yeshu and = similar=20 Talmudic teachings were purposely hidden from=20 Christians.

"=85the Toledot = Yeshu, or the=20 Sepher Toldos Jeschu, described here as originating = in the=20 Middle Ages=85belongs in a much earlier period. = Eliphas Levi=20 asserts that 'the Sepher Toldos, to which the = Jews=20 attribute a great antiquity and which they hid from = the=20 Christians with such precautions that this = book was=20 for a long while unfindable, is quoted for the = first=20 time by Raymond Martin of the Order of the Preaching = Brothers=85 This book was evidently written by a = Rabbi=20 initiated into the mysteries of the Cabala 1.'"=20 10.

History reveals that = The Talmud=20 itself was put on trial and ordered to be burned, by = King=20 Louis IX in June of 1242, because of the various = slanders=20 against Christ, and Christianity. It was stated that = The=20 Talmud contained such things as it being acceptable to = deceive=20 a Christian without any scruple; that it was permitted = to=20 break a promise, and so on.

The stories = contained in Toledot=20 Yeshu and similar teachings were known in Jewish = circles, but=20 did not come into the hands of 'Gentiles' or = 'Christians'=20 until Raymond Martin translated the Toledot Yeshu into = Latin.=20 Later, Martin Luther summarized it in German under the = name=20 Schem Hamphorasch and his expose can be found = in French=20 in Gustave Brunet's, Evangiles Apocryphes.=20 11.

According to = Geschichte der=20 Juden, by Jewish historian Heinrich Graetz, the = image of=20 Jesus Christ is simply as an offshoot of Essenism and = Jesus=20 was just performing what any adept in the mysteries = could=20 do.

"=85Thus the = Jewish historian=20 Graetz declares that Jesus simply appropriated to = himself=20 the essential features of Essenism, and that = primitive=20 Christianity was "nothing but an offshoot of = Essenism"2"=20 12a.

Nesta Webster = summarizes the=20 Christ of the Talmud:

". . . So after = representing=20 Christ as a magician in the Toledot Yeshu and = the=20 Talmud, Jewish tradition seeks to explain His = miraculous=20 works as those of a mere healer-an idea that we = shall=20 find descending right through the secret societies = to this=20 day=85 if the miracles of Christ were simply due to = a=20 knowledge of natural laws and His doctrines were the = outcome=20 of a sect, the whole theory of His divine power and = mission=20 falls to the ground=85" 12.

Many sources state = that when the=20 teachings regarding Jesus Christ in the Toledot Yeshu = and=20 other Jewish books were discovered in the early = 1600's, there=20 were serious repercussions. A Jewish synod in Poland = in 1631,=20 ordered the offending passages to be expunged, to be = replaced=20 by circles which the Rabbis were to fill in orally = when giving=20 instructions to young Jews. This is documented by = P.L.B=20 Drach:

"Drach, op.cit. = I.168, 169.=20 The text of this encyclical is given in Hebrew and = also in=20 translation, thus: " This is why we enjoin you, = under the=20 pain of excommunication major, to print nothing = in future=20 editions, whether of Mischna or of = the=20 Gemara, which relates whether for good or = evil to the=20 acts of Jesus the Nazarene, and to = substitute=20 instead a circle like this O, which will = warn the=20 Rabbis and schoolmasters to teach the young these = passages=20 only viva voce. By means of this precaution = the=20 savants amongst the Nazarenes will have no further = pretext=20 to attack us on this subject. Cf, Abbe'Chiarini, Le = Talmud=20 de Babylone, p. 45 (1831)."=20 13.

These passages are = said to have=20 been reinserted since then, although such offensive = passages=20 would not necessarily be in any English translations = or newer=20 editions. 14.

These then, are some = of the=20 Hebrew Roots - a significant part of which are the = teachings=20 and thought within the Talmud regarding our Lord and = Savior,=20 Jesus Christ.

Some might say, that = the views=20 presented from the past regarding Jesus Christ do not = apply=20 today, or have no effect on our studying Jewish = tradition,=20 teachings or thought within the Hebrew Roots movement. = That=20 perhaps, the above information is no longer taught. We = must=20 ask ourselves, then, what was and is today, Jewish = thought=20 regarding the Messiah, salvation, sin, the Son of God, = and the=20 divinity of Christ? Do these Jewish terms mean the = same as=20 what we think?

John=20 14:6

"Jesus saith unto = him, I am=20 the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto = the=20 Father, but by me."

Acts=20 4:12

"Neither is there = salvation in=20 any other: for there is none other name under heaven = given=20 among men, whereby we must be = saved."

In his volume, The = Talmud,=20 Joseph Barclay confirmed the writings of Drach, a = talmudist=20 turned Catholic whose writings were never refuted by = Jews,=20 that Jesus was a sorcerer:

" =85 Abominable = calumnies on=20 Christ and Christianity occur not only in the Cabala = but in=20 the earlier editions of the Talmud. In these, says = Barclay -=20 "Our Lord and savior is "that one", "such an one", = "a fool",=20 "the leper", "the deceiver of Israel", etc. = Efforts=20 are made to prove that He is the son of Joseph = Pandira=20 before His marriage with Mary. His miracles are=20 attributed to sorcery the secret of which He = brought in=20 a slit in His flesh out of Egypt. He is said had = been first=20 stoned and then hanged on the eve of the Passover. = His=20 disciples are called heretics and opprobious = names. They=20 are accused of immoral practices, and the New = Testament=20 is called a sinful book. The references to these = subjects manifest the most bitter aversion and = hatred."=20 15.

Jewish & Christian = Terms

 Knowing that = there is much=20 diversity of thought inside Judaism with four [some = say three,=20 under different terms] basic groups: Orthodoxy, = Conservative,=20 Reform, and Reconstructionist Judaism, it is difficult = to=20 present their respective ideas as being in agreement = with one=20 another. However, there are some underlying beliefs = that=20 appear to remain constant and accepted by most Jews = regarding=20 Christ, the Messiah, salvation, sin, and so=20 on. 

Jesus and Messiah

Dr. Lawrence J. = Epstein,=20 considered a Conservative Jew, explains some of = today's=20 thinking pertaining to "The Differences between = Judaism and=20 Christianity":

In "THE JEWISH VIEW = OF JESUS",=20 Dr. Epstein gives Jesus credit for being a good = teacher, but=20 not God:

"To Christians, = the central=20 tenet of their religion is the belief that Jesus is = the Son=20 of God, part of the trinity, the savior of souls who = is the=20 messiah. He is God's revelation through flesh. Jesus = was, in=20 Christian terms, God incarnate, God in the flesh who = came to=20 Earth to absorb the sins of humans and therefore = free from=20 sin those who accepted his divinity. To Jews, = whatever wonderful teacher and storyteller = Jesus may=20 have been, he was just a human, not the son of = God=20 (except in the metaphorical sense in which all = humans are=20 children of God). In the Jewish view, Jesus = cannot save=20 souls; only God can. Jesus did not, in the = Jewish=20 view, rise from the dead." = 16.

The "Jews for = Judaism"=20 web site explains Jesus as a false prophet = predicted in=20 the Old Testament.

"=85Jesus the = Nazarene, who=20 imagined that he would be messiah and was killed, is = alluded=20 to in the book of Daniel, as it is said, `And the = sons of=20 the transgressors among thy people will rise, in = order to=20 establish a vision, and will stumble' (Dan. 11:14). = Can=20 there be a greater stumbling then this? All the = prophets=20 said that messiah will be a redeemer and a savior to = the=20 Israelites, will bring together their outcasts, and = will=20 strengthen their obedience to the Divine precepts, = but he=20 (Jesus) caused destruction by the sword to = Israel, the=20 dispersion of those left, and their humiliation. He = changed=20 the law, and misled many people to worship a being = beside=20 G-D=85." 17.

Rabbi Hyam Maccoby, = in=20 Revolution in Judaea, written in 1973 and still = proclaimed accurate today, defines the Jewish view of = Messiah=20 as an anointed one, and angel or king, but not=20 divine:

"The title = "Messiah'=20 (Greek-Christos) was not a divine title among = the=20 Jews. It simply means ' anointed'. It was = given to=20 two Jewish officials, King and the High Priest=85 = every Jewish=20 king of the house of David was known as Messiah, or = Christ=85"=20 18.

"The 'Son of Man', = was not a=20 Messiah. He was an angel identified with the = Guardian=20 Angel of Israel, with Metatron, with the angel = who=20 guided the Children of Israel in the wilderness=85"=20 19.

"=85There is = hardly any=20 reference in the Prophetic writings of the Old = Testament to=20 the Messiah as a person. There is no splendid = shining figure=20 judging mankind, sitting at the right-hand of God = and coming=20 very near to eclipsing God Himself by His glory."=20 20.

"Messiah=85in = Jewish eyes,=20 belonged to royalty, not divinity. Even the = title=20 'Son of God" was to Jews (but not to the = Gnostics)=20 a human title applied at various times in the = Hebrew=20 Scriptures to Kings such as King David=85"Son of = Man" also was=20 not a divine title=85far better known as a mode of = address to=20 a prophet=85to mean simply 'human being'."=20 21.

The Jews for = Judaism web=20 site explains the historical "Jewish Belief in=20 Messiah," from the Mishna (Torah) by=20 Maimonides:

"... In his = monumental work=20 Mishneh Torah, Maimonides (1135-1204) spelled out = the=20 fundamental Jewish concept of the messiah as it was = handed=20 down to us, generation after generation, from the = time of=20 the prophets=85"

"=85from the = Mishneh Torah,=20 Hilchot Melachim XI - XII. The King Messiah will in = some=20 future time come, restore the kingdom of David to = its former=20 power, build the Temple, bring together the = scattered of=20 Israel, and all the ancient laws will again be in = force.=20 Sacrifices will be offered, and years of release and = Jubilees will be kept as prescribed in the Torah. = Whoever=20 does not believe in him, or does not hope for his = coming,=20 shows a lack of faith not only in the prophets, but = also in=20 the Torah=85" 22.

Many Jews have = believed there=20 would be many Messiahs. At the time of Christ, Hyam = Maccoby=20 states:

"=85 Any leader = who succeeded in=20 driving out the Romans and setting up an independent = Jewish=20 state would have little difficulty in being = recognized as=20 the Messiah. His very success would prove his claim. = Thus=20 Bar Kochba was recognized as the Messiah = by=20 Rabbi Akiva even though there was no evidence of = his=20 descent from David." 23.

From the Jewish = Guardian=20 of 1924, we read that the great messianic prophecy, = Isaiah 53,=20 refers to the sufferings of Israel, rather than=20 Christ:

"=85 an article in = the Jewish=20 Press,=85 according to the teaching of the "Liberal = Jewish=20 Synagogue," the beautiful passages in the = fifty-third=20 chapter of Isaiah concerning " the Man of Sorrows = acquainted=20 with grief, "usually supposed by Christians to = relate to the=20 promised Messiah, are interpreted to modern Jewish = youth as=20 relating to Israel and signifying that Israel's " = sufferings=20 were caused by the sins of other nations," who thus = "escaped=20 the suffering they deserved." Consequently, "Israel = was=20 offered for the sake of the whole world.2. "=20 24. 

Messiah and Peace

 According = to Dr.=20 Lawrence J. Epstein, current Jewish teaching excludes = Jesus=20 because it is unanimously believed that the Messiah = will bring=20 peace:

"Jesus is not seen = as the=20 messiah. In the Jewish view, the messiah is a = human being=20 who will usher in an era of peace. We can tell = the=20 messiah by looking at the world and seeing if it is = at=20 peace. From the Jewish view, this clearly did not = happen=20 when Jesus was on Earth or anytime after his death." = 25.

Hyam Maccoby = considers Jesus to=20 be a rebel, but misrepresented by the gospel accounts = out of=20 fear of reprisals by Rome:

"=85Jesus was = executed as a=20 rebel, against Rome, not as a blasphemer against the = Jewish=20 religion, and that the Gospel's misrepresentations = on this=20 point are politically motivated--I regard as = strongly=20 established=85" = 26.

Hyam Maccoby, = author, is=20 considered a classical scholar and Rabbi of Reform = Judaism,=20 and has in recent years been director of the library = at the=20 Leo Baeck College of Judaistics in London. His books = appear to=20 present accepted ideas regarding Christ, Christianity = and the=20 New Testament and the Jewish thought. Clarifying the = various=20 Jewish thought and Christian misconceptions redefines = Jesus'=20 mission:

"=85The phrase = 'the kingdom=20 of God'=85meant the reign of God (not His = heavenly=20 territory) and referred to a projected return to = a Jewish=20 system of theocracy=85" = 27.

"=85.He [Jesus] = had campaigned=20 among 'the lost sheep of Israel', calling them to=20 repentance, because he felt that the coming of God's = Kingdom=20 was being held back by Israel's sin's. Pharisee = writings=20 often stress that God's promises to Israel = are not=20 automatically fulfilled; they depend on Israel's=20 worthiness and co-operation ... "=20 28.

"=85Jesus' = mission as a=20 prophet was exclusively directed towards the Jews, = not=20 towards the Gentiles. The idea that Jesus = rejected the=20 Jews and transferred the Old Testament 'promises' to = the=20 Gentiles was a later invention of the = Gentile-Christian=20 Church=85" 29.

"=85 Some believed = that the=20 Messiah would inaugurate a new era for the whole = world; that=20 the nations of the world would acknowledge the One = God and=20 his Temple in Jerusalem; that the Jews would be = revered as=20 the chosen priests of the One God; and that an era = of world=20 peace would begin when, in the words of Isaiah's=20 wonderful internationalist vision, the swords = would=20 be beaten into plowshares and the wolf would lie = down with=20 lamb. Some, however, did not believe that the coming = of the=20 Messiah would necessarily bring about an era of=20 international peace. There might be many Messiahs - = many=20 more sorrows and comfortings, defeats and victories = - for=20 the Jewish people before that happened. After all, = there had=20 been Messiahs before and none had brought = everlasting peace.=20 The vision of Isaiah was acknowledged by every = Pharisee, as=20 the word of God but it was not necessarily attached = to the=20 expectation of the coming Messiah who would defeat = the=20 Romans." 30.

In The Traditions = of the=20 Jews, from the Talmud (treatises Baba Bathra folio = 74b,=20 Pesachim folio 32, Bekhoroth folio 57 and Massektoth = Ta'anith=20 folio 31), J.P Stehaln presents a glorious scenario of = the=20 Messianic era - without Jesus Christ as the=20 Messiah:

"=85 when the = Messianic era=20 arrives. After the return of the Jews from all = nations and=20 parts of the world=85 the Messiah, we are told in = the Talmud,=20 will entertain them at a gorgeous banquet, where = they will=20 be seated at tables and regaled with wine from = Adam's=20 wine-cellar. The first course is to consist of a = roasted ox=20 named Behemoth, so immense that every day it eats up = the=20 grass upon a thousand hills; the second of a = monstrous fish=20 Leviathan; the third of a female Leviathan boiled = and=20 pickled; the fourth of a gigantic roast fowl known = as=20 Barjuchne, of which the egg alone was so enormous = that when=20 it fell out of the nest it crushed three hundred = tall cedars=20 and the white overflowed threescore villages. This = course is=20 to be followed up by "the most splendid and pompous=20 Dessert," that can be procured, including fruit from = the=20 Tree of Life and "the Pomegranates of Eden which are = preserved for the Just."

"At the end of the = banquet=20 "God will entertain the company at a ball"; = He=20 Himself will sit in the midst of them, and everyone = will=20 point Him out with his finger, saying: "Behold, this = is our=20 God: we have waited for Him, we will be glad and = rejoice in=20 His salvation." 31.

Sin=20 and Salvation

 Romans=20 3:23

"For all have = sinned, and come=20 short of the glory of God."

From "The = Differences between=20 Judaism and Christianity, we see the great = partition=20 between Jewish and Christian thought on sin=20 confirmed.

"Judaism does = not=20 accept the notion of original sin, the = idea that=20 people are bad from birth and cannot remove sin by=20 themselves but need an act of grace provided by the=20 sacrificial death of Jesus as atonement for all of=20 humanity's sins. For Christians, there are no other = forms of=20 salvation other than through Jesus."=20 32.

Dr. Epstein goes on = to explain=20 that Jewish thought about sin and atonement. The = sinner may=20 seek forgiveness from God through human = works:

"He [Jesus] = also did=20 not absorb the sins of people. For Jews, sins = are=20 removed not by Jesus' atonement but by seeking = forgiveness.=20 Jews seek forgiveness from God for sins against God = and from=20 other people (not just God) for sins against those = people.=20 Seeking forgiveness requires a sincere sense of = repenting=20 but also seeking directly to redress the wrong done = to=20 someone. Sins are partially removed through prayer = which=20 replaced animal sacrifice as a way of relieving = sins. They=20 are also removed by correcting errors against = others. "=20 33.

Hyam Maccoby=20 explains:

"... There was no = concept of a=20 Suffering Messiah who would die on the cross to = purge=20 mankind of sin=85. To the Jews salvation was a = physical not a=20 purely spiritual concept. The Messianic age, to the = Jews,=20 was to be the culmination of human history on earth. = 34.

Also, regarding = prayer Maccoby=20 believes that it is possible for man to approach God = in a=20 sinless condition:

"=85The belief in = the efficacy=20 of prayer was very strong among the Pharisees=85. = Only the=20 most concerted beam of concentration, directed from=20 Gethsemane to God, could obliterate the traces of = the sins=20 of Israel, and bring about the hour of redemption. = Jesus=20 alone was not sufficient=85This explains why = Jesus=20 narrowed down his company to the Twelve on that = night. He=20 wanted the company of those on whom he could most = rely, for=20 the power of sinless prayer would be far more = important=20 than the strength of mere number." = 35.

Heaven and Hell

The writings of Dr. = Epstein=20 present the Jews' overly spiritualized and less severe = view of=20 the afterlife:

"...Traditionalists gave the=20 name Gehenna to the place where souls were punished. = Many=20 Jewish thinkers noted that since, essentially, God = is filled=20 with mercy and love, punishment is not to be = considered=20 to be eternal. There are, similarly, many = varying=20 conceptions of paradise, such as that paradise is = the place=20 where we finally understand the true concept of God. = It is=20 also possible that there is no separate Heaven = and Hell,=20 only lesser or greater distance from God after = death. In=20 addition, punishment might be self-determined = on the=20 basis of suffering in kind the suffering the person = brought=20 about. That is, Judaism doesn't have a clear sense = of Heaven=20 and Hell, with different places in Hell for = different=20 punishments. Rather, the idea is that God uses the = afterlife=20 to provide ultimate justice and for the wicked to = seek some=20 sort of final redemption." = 36.

Note Scripture = says:

Romans=20 6:20-23:

"For when ye were = the servants=20 of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit = had ye=20 then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? For = the end=20 of those things is death. But now being made free = from sin,=20 and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto=20 holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the = wages of sin=20 is death; but the gift of God is eternal life = through Jesus=20 Christ our Lord. "

Hebrews=20 9:27:

"And as it is = appointed unto=20 man once to die, but after this the=20 judgment.

 Oneness = Doctrine &=20 the Trinity

 Dr. Epstein = summarizes the=20 Jewish doctrine of "oneness" as opposed to the = "Trinity" or=20 Christian doctrine of three Persons in one = God.

"Judaism insists = on a notion=20 of monotheism, the idea that there is one God. As = Judaism=20 understands this idea, God cannot be made up of = parts,=20 even if those parts are mysteriously united. The = Christian notion of trinitarianism is that God is = made up of=20 God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy = Spirit. Such a=20 view, even if called monotheistic because the three = parts=20 are, by divine mystery, only one God, is = incompatible with=20 the Jewish view that such a division is not = possible. The=20 Jewish revolutionary idea is that God is one. This = idea=20 allows for God's unity and uniqueness as a creative = force.=20 Thus, for Jews, God is the creator of all that we = like and=20 all that we don't. There is no evil force with an = ability to=20 create equal to God's. Judaism sees Christianity's=20 trinitarianism as a weakening of the idea of God's=20 oneness." 37.

Peter Michas, of = Messengers of=20 Messiah, asserted in an email discussion this belief = in the=20 "oneness" doctrine.

"=85 Yet the = minute I saw the=20 Hebrew thinking of the oneness and the rest = of it, it=20 was never unclear to me again." = 38.

In his book, THE ROD = OF AN=20 ALMOND TREE IN GOD'S MASTER PLAN, Peter. Michas = expands upon=20 his approval of the Hebrew viewpoint of God and the=20 Trinity.

"The unity of = Yeshua=20 HaMashiach with God the Father and the Holy Spirit = has never=20 been clearly understood from the doctrine of the = Trinity..."=20 39.

"To understand the = true=20 relationship of God the Father, God the Son, and God = the=20 Holy Spirit, it is essential to preserve = the=20 concept of oneness..." = 40.

"The aspect of = the=20 Father may be simply understood as the Will of = God. The=20 aspect of the Son may be understood as the = Word of=20 God. The aspect of the Spirit of the Holy One = may be=20 understood as the Power of God..." = 41.

"To say God is = three=20 'persons' opens the door to misunderstanding = God. God is=20 Spirit and cannot be reduced to the concept of a = person..."=20 42.

"The Spirit of the = Holy One is=20 the very essence of the = power of God=20 the Father and not some separate entity."=20 43.

Peter Michas refers = to the=20 Godhead as three "aspects" and the Holy Spirit as an = "essence"=20 rather than a Person. It is already established by the = Jewish=20 people themselves that the Judaic teachings reject the = doctrine of three Persons in one God. They do not = believe God=20 would manifest in the flesh as Jesus Christ nor do = they=20 believe that He is God. Their oneness doctrine is that = there=20 cannot be a Father, Son and Holy Spirit, which means = the=20 rejection of Jesus Christ as divine Savior and=20 Lord.

There is no Trinity = concept in=20 Judaism, unless, however, one embraces the Jewish=20 Kabbalah.

"M. Vulliaud = quotes Isaac=20 Meyer's assertion that, "the triad, of the ancient = Cabala is=20 Kether, the Father; Binah, the Holy Spirit or the = Mother;=20 and Hochmah, the Word or the Son." But in order to = avoid the=20 sequence of the Christian Trinity this arrangement = has been=20 altered in the modern Cabala of Luria and Moses of=20 Cordovero, etc." 44.

The Jewish = Encyclop=9Cdia=20 clarifies that the Cabalistic trinity is not to be = confused=20 with Christianity.

"... The Jewish = Encyclop=9Cdia=85goes on to say that what = appears to be=20 Christian in the Cabala is only esoteric doctrine."=20 45.

2 John=20 7:

"For many = deceivers are=20 entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus = Christ is=20 come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an=20 antichrist."

2 John=20 9:

"Whosoever = transgresseth, and=20 abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. = He that=20 abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the = Father=20 and the Son."

Christians & the Chosen = People

 Jewish people = characterize=20 Christians in terms different from what we may=20 think.

Avi ben Mordechai = states that=20 Jews are specifically called to = proselytize:

"=85 He said to go = out into all=20 the world (as you go) and make talmidim of all = the=20 goyim. =85we are His talmidim or students of His = Oral=20 Traditions which is the proper definition of the = term=20 "Gospel." We are to follow His Mishnah and = Gemara, i.e.,=20 His Talmud, and take it to the goyim, teaching them = to=20 observe all that He commanded us!=85"=20 46.

Isn't this precisely = the=20 ministry of Peter Michas, Jacob Prasch and other = Hebrew Roots=20 teachers: taking the Talmud to the goyim. The term = "goyim"=20 which Mr. Mordechai uses needs to be understood in its = historical context. Citing information from the = Kabbalistic=20 book, the Zohar, a part of the Jewish mysticism which = Avi ben=20 Mordechai teaches, we note:

"=85 the Chosen = People=85forms the=20 basis of all Talmudic and Cabalistic writings. = =85According to=20 the Zohar, "All Israelites will have a part in the = future=20 world," and on arrival there will not be handed over = like=20 the goyim (or non-Jewish races) to the hands of the = angel=20 Douma and sent down to Hell.5. Indeed the goyim = are even=20 denied human attributes." = 47.

According to The = Emek ha=20 Melek, the work of the Cabalist Naphtali, a = disciple of=20 Luria, the goyim are of the devil:

"=85Thus the Zohar = again=20 explains that the words of the Scripture "Jehovah = Elohim=20 made man", mean that He made Israel. 6. The=20 seventeenth-century Rabbinical treatise Emek ha = Melek=20 observes: " Our Rabbis of blessed memory have said: = "Ye Jews=20 are men because of the soul ye have from the Supreme = Man=20 (i.e, God). But the nations of the world are not = styled=20 men because they have not, from the Holy and = Supreme=20 Man, the Neschama (or glorious soul) but they = have the=20 Nephesch (soul) from Adam Belial, that is the = malicious and=20 unnecessary man, called Sammael, the Supreme = Devil." 7"=20 48.

Another way of = saying or=20 spelling goyim, is Goi. Rev. I. = B.=20 Pranaitis, in his online work, The Talmud = Unmasked,=20 notes that this term has been removed from recent=20 editions:

"Goi - = Race, or=20 people. The Jews also call a man a Goi - a gentile; = they=20 call a gentile woman a Goiah. ... It is mostly = applied to=20 non-Jews, or idolators. In Jewish books which = treat of=20 Idolatry, worshippers of idols are often called by = this=20 single word Goi. For this reason, in more recent = editions of=20 the Talmud the use of the word Goi is purposely = avoided and=20 other words for non-Jews are=20 substituted.

It is well known = that in the=20 Jewish language, the Jews call Christians among whom = they=20 live, Goim. Nor do the Jews deny = this.

Sometimes in their = popular=20 magazines they say that this word means nothing = harmful or=20 evil. But the contrary can be seen = in their=20 books written in the Hebrew language. For instance, = in=20 Choschen Hammischpat (34, 22), the name Goi is used = in a=20 depraved sense:

"Traitors and = Epicureans=20 and Apostates are worse than=20 Goim"49.

Indeed the whole = idea of=20 gentiles or "goyim" studying the Jewish oral law as = suggested=20 by Jacob Prasch, Peter Michas, Avi ben Mordechai and = others,=20 is in direct disobedience to the proclamations in the = Talmud.=20 Even a Christian who is found studying the Law of = Israel=20 merits death. Sanhedrin (59a) states:

"Rabbi Jochanan = says: A Goi=20 who pries into the Law is guilty to death. "Even a = Christian=20 who is found studying the Law of Israel merits=20 death."

It seems very = perplexing indeed=20 that leaders of the Hebrew Roots movement would direct = our=20 thoughts to the teachings of the sages in the Talmud, = Mishna=20 and Midrash, when these same sages have been teaching = the=20 Jewish people to destroy the writings of the = Christians=20 including the New Testament.

"Shabbath 116a. = Jews must=20 destroy the books of the Christians, i.e. the New=20 Testament."

Christian=20 Jews

 The = organization, Jews for=20 Judaism, "the Worlds foremost countermissionary=20 organization", insinuates that the Jews are = not=20 fooled by Christians who assume a Jewish image to = proselytize=20 them. Even Jews recognize the great divide between = Judaism and=20 Christianity.

"=85 Though Hebrew = Christianity=20 claims to be a form of Judaism, it is not=85 It = deceptively=20 uses the sacred symbols of Jewish observance (i.e. = community=20 Passover seders, menorahs, messianic services, etc.) = as a=20 cover to convert Jews to Christianity, a belief = system=20 antithetical to Judaism=85 Hebrew Christianity = is not a=20 form of Judaism and its members, even if they are of = Jewish=20 birth, cannot be considered members of the Jewish = community.=20 Hebrew Christians are in radical conflict with = the=20 communal interests and the destiny of the Jewish = people.=20 They have crossed an unbreachable chasm by accepting = another=20 religion. =85"

"=85 practice of = any other=20 religious tradition has been understood to lead to = the loss=20 of rights to full participation in the Jewish = community=85Our=20 history has clearly shown that when confronted with = a group=20 of Jews which has adopted another faith and seeks to = convert=20 others, we must stand firm in asserting that this = other=20 faith is not Judaism and that its adherents have = forfeited=20 their privileges as Jews. Jewish tradition believes = that the=20 opportunity to return to participation in the Jewish = community is always open. When this occurs, all = privileges=20 are restored." 50.

This repudiation of = those who=20 apostatize from Judaism is stronger in the Talmud = teachings of=20 the Oral law of the sages. Hilkhoth Akum (X, 2) states = that=20 defectors must be killed.

"These things = [supra] are=20 intended for idolaters. But Israelites also, who = lapse from=20 their religion and become epicureans, are to be = killed, and=20 we must persecute them to the end. For they afflict = Israel=20 and turn the people from God." = 51.

Non-Jews or = converted Jews who=20 affect a Jewish demeanor or compromise Christian = doctrine,=20 meaning inclusion of New Testament doctrine, to appeal = to the=20 Jewish mindset are surrendering the precious pearl of = Jesus=20 Christ who alone leads to salvation. The ecumenical = approach=20 does not lead Jews to Jesus Christ, but patronizes = their=20 religion of dead works, and results in the Christian's = acceptance of religion on Jewish terms.

Galatians=20 5:1-8

"Stand fast = therefore in the=20 liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be = not=20 entangled again with the yoke of bondage. Behold, I = Paul,=20 say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ = shall profit=20 you nothing. For I testify again to every man that = is=20 circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole = law. Christ=20 is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you = are=20 justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. For = we=20 through the Spirit wait for the hope of = righteousness by=20 faith. For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision = availeth any=20 thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh = by love.=20 Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should = not obey=20 the truth? This persuasion cometh not of him that = calleth=20 you.

Common Ideas

Contemporary Jewish = thought=20 reflects the same aversion to Jesus Christ as = historical=20 Judaism:

"Jews vary about = what they=20 think of Jesus as a man. Some respect him as an = ethical=20 teacher who accepted Jewish law, as someone who = didn't even=20 see himself as the messiah, who didn't want to start = a new=20 religion at all. Rather, Jesus is seen by these Jews = as=20 someone who challenged the religious authorities of = his day=20 for their practices. In this view, he meant to = improve=20 Judaism according to his own understanding not to = break with=20 it." 52.

Hyam Maccoby sums up = Jewish=20 thought regarding Jesus as this:

"With the = composition of=20 the Gospels, then, a fictitious Jesus was = created,=20 suitable for the needs of the Hellenistic = Gentile-Christian=20 Church. The Prophet King, human and Jewish, who was = revered=20 but not worshiped by the Jewish-Christian Church was = turned=20 into a Divine Sacrifice. Jesus, who was, in = reality,=20 an apocalyptic Pharisee rabbi who claimed the titles = of=20 Prophet and King, was turned into a pagan god."=20 53.

Dr. Epstein=20 concludes:

"Whatever the = Jewish response=20 is, one point is crucial. No one who is = Jewish, no=20 born Jew and no one who converts to Judaism, can = believe in=20 Jesus as the literal son of God or as the messiah. = For the=20 Jewish people, there is no God but God."=20 54.

We could elaborate = further on=20 the Jewish thought regarding the New Testament, the = writings=20 of Paul, who was viewed as a heretic, and the = disciples. We=20 could expand the idea that many Jews believe that = James and=20 Peter were Pharisaic Rabbis, who believed in the = Jewish idea=20 of the Messiah-- that Jesus was not divine.

We could expand on = the theory=20 that James, believed to have been the head of the = Nazarene=20 movement, was not in any way in conflict with the = teachings of=20 the Pharisees, but was devout in promoting them. We = could=20 expand on the Jewish idea that Paul, not Jesus, is = viewed as=20 the originator of Christianity, of the concept of = Jesus being=20 divine, and that notion came from Greek paganism. We = could,=20 but one only has to go to Jewish sites and see that = their=20 beliefs are diametrically opposed to Christianity. = Sadly, we=20 would also see the denial of the virgin birth and = condemnation=20 of all connected to Christ. They are devout in their=20 convictions.

While the Hebrew or = messianic=20 movements urge us to embrace "our foundational Hebrew = roots",=20 Scripture tells us that our foundation is none other = than=20 Jesus Christ:

I Corinthians=20 3:11:

"For other = foundation can no=20 man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.=20 "

If Jewish teachers = or teachings=20 cannot entertain the idea of a divine Christ or = Messiah, sin,=20 salvation, eternity, and other issues, what then? How = are we=20 to learn the 'True Meaning' of Scripture from them, = unless we=20 reject the very truths of Jesus Christ, salvation, sin = and the=20 rest of the New Testament?

As stated above, "No = one who is=20 Jewish, no born Jew and no one who converts to = Judaism, can=20 believe in Jesus as the literal son of God or as the=20 messiah."

Jewish convictions = proclaim a=20 Christian cannot be considered Jewish or adopt the = Jewish=20 beliefs, rituals and ceremonies, and still remain a = Christian.=20 It would be like becoming a Christian Muslim or a = Christian=20 Mormon -- an impossibility.

Romans 2:28-29 = :=20 "For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; = neither is=20 that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: But = he is a=20 Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that = of the=20 heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose = praise is=20 not of men, but of God."

Galatians=20 3:2

"This only would I = learn of=20 you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, = or by=20 the hearing of faith?"

We cannot be both. = Cultural=20 heritage and genealogy cannot take precedence over our = faith=20 and obedience to Christ. If it does, we are not = serving Him,=20 as we should.

If the Talmud and = other Jewish=20 works are upholding the doctrines as described above, = from the=20 past and today, what business do Christians have = embracing=20 these teachings, rituals and ceremonies and the = reasons for=20 them?

Reason tells us that = the=20 theology of the Jewish Rabbis and teachers, which are = opposed=20 to the very foundations of our beliefs, influences = every=20 aspect of their sacred books=85and their teachings. We = need to=20 explore the instructions within the Talmud = further.
