All mixed up over birds and dinosaurs

Red-faced and downhearted, paleontologists = are=20 growing convinced that they have been snookered = by a bit=20 of fossil fakery from China. The "feathered = dinosaur"=20 specimen that they recently unveiled to much = fanfare=20 apparently combines the tail of a dinosaur with = the body=20 of a bird, they say.=20

"It's the craziest thing I've ever been = involved with=20 in my career," says paleontologist Philip J. = Currie of=20 the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology in = Drumheller,=20 Alberta.=20

The fossil, named Archaeoraptor = liaoningensis,=20 comes from the northeastern province of = Liaoning, where=20 local farmers have been unearthing many new = dinosaur=20 species, some showing evidence of downlike coats = and=20 feathers. Currie, Stephen Czerkas of the = Dinosaur Museum=20 in Blanding, Utah, and Xing Xu of the Institute = of=20 Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology in = Beijing=20 announced the discovery of Archaeoraptor = at a=20 press conference in Washington, D.C., at the = National=20 Geographic Society last October (SN: 11/20/99, = p. 328).=20

At the time, they called it a missing link = between=20 birds and dinosaurs because it manifested the = long bony=20 tail of dromaeosaurid dinosaurs and the = specialized=20 shoulders and chest of birds.=20

The scientists couldn't be sure of the = fossil's=20 history because they had not excavated it. = Spirited out=20 of China, the specimen attracted Czerkas' = attention when=20 he saw it for sale in Utah. His museum arranged = its=20 purchase by a benefactor.=20

Recently, while examining a dromaeosaurid = dinosaur in=20 a private collection in China, Xu decided that = the=20 Archaeoraptor fossil is a chimera. The = tail of=20 that dinosaur is identical to the = Archaeoraptor=20 tail, he told Science News.=20

The two tails are mirror images of each = other,=20 derived from the same individual, says Xu. When = rocks=20 containing fossils are split, they often break = into two=20 fossils. Currie suspects that someone sought to = enhance=20 the value of Archaeoraptor by pasting one = part of=20 the dinosaur's tail to a bird fossil.=20

Czerkas is reserving judgement until he can = view both=20 fossils together. "I've got all this other = evidence=20 suggesting the tail does belong with the=20 [Archaeoraptor] fossil," he says.=20

The paleontologists already had concerns = about the=20 tail because the bones connecting it to the body = are=20 missing and the slab shows signs of reworking. = They had=20 convinced themselves, however, that the two = parts=20 belonged together.=20

Other scientists criticize the team and the = National=20 Geographic Society for unveiling the fossil = before any=20 detailed article had appeared in a scientific = journal.=20 "There probably has never been a fossil with a = sadder=20 history than this one," says Storrs L. Olson of = the=20 Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of = Natural=20 History in Washington, D.C.=20

Because National Geographic published = an=20 article about Archaeoraptor before any = formal=20 description, credit for the scientific name now = goes to=20 the author of the magazine article, rather than = to the=20 scientists, says Olson.=20

Currie says that the mix-up over this one = fossil does=20 not diminish the evidence suggesting that birds = evolved=20 from dinosaurs. It will, however, cause him to = be more=20 tight-lipped in the future about fossil finds = until a=20 journal article appears. "Certainly, I don't = recommend=20 to any budding scientist that they do it this = way."=20
